ABOUT THE JOB

CarbonBuilt addresses climate change by permanently and cost-effectively reducing cement usage and storing CO₂ in concrete. Our innovative Reversa™ technology was awarded the grand prize in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition in 2021, and we are presently focused on making the leap from two successful pilot demonstrations to our first commercial plant. As we prepare for our commercial introduction, CarbonBuilt is seeking a concrete scientist to join our rapidly growing team.

 

You will work directly with CarbonBuilt’s engineering team to design innovative low-carbon concrete formulations that will cure with gaseous CO₂ via mineralization. You will conduct research including hands-on lab testing, data analysis, literature review, and field testing/demonstration.

 

Qualifications:

  • M.S. in civil engineering, materials science/engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or other comparable fields plus one or more years of relevant experience in research and development on cement/concrete, or Ph.D. in a related field

  • Knowledge of formulation design and development of cementitious materials

  • Knowledge of cement hydration and carbonation reactions  

  • Ability to extend principles of mixture design from ordinary portland cement to alternative binder systems

  • Ability to select and perform analytical techniques for physical and chemical characterization of solids and aqueous solutions

  • Familiarity with statistical methods including design of experiments and machine learning methods

  • Ability to design, build, and test prototype carbonation reactor systems (note: preferred, but not required)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new low-carbon concrete formulations that can mineralize CO₂

  • Develop a screening methodology and selection criteria to determine the suitability of alternative binder systems

  • Optimize processing conditions to enhance carbonation kinetics

  • Measure and optimize concrete performance

  • Conduct laboratory functions, including synthesis, materials characterization, and record-keeping and analysis of data

  • Travel to project sites to demonstrate technology using the new formulations at pilot scale (for up to 2-3 months per year; e.g. 4-6 2-week trips)

  • Maintain & calibrate testing equipment

  • Other duties as assigned by Head of Engineering
